Aleksanteri Institute, the Finnish Centre for Russian and Eastern European Studies is affiliated with the University of Helsinki and operates as a national centre of research, study and expertise pertaining to Russia and Eastern Europe, particularly in the social sciences and humanities. The institute co-ordinates and promotes co-operation and interaction between the academic world, public administration, business life and civil society in Finland and abroad.

Arca Russica provides an overview of free online information resources on the main subjects of Russian studies.  It currently offers 700 selected links to primary sources, dictionaries, encyclopedias, bibliographies, catalogues, databases, digitized publications, image banks, and other information available in the public domain.

Arctic Centre, at the University of Lapland is a national research institute and science centre. The Arctic Centre conducts and conveys internationally recognized, multidisciplinary research concerning Arctic issues, and it trains experts on the Arctic.

Baltic Development Forum is an independent non-profit networking organization with members from large companies, major cities, institutional investors and business associations in the Baltic Sea Region.
The mission of Baltic Development Forum is to promote the Baltic Sea Region as an integrated, prosperous and internationally competitive growth region.

Baltic Institute of Finland is a non-profit foundation-based organization promoting cooperation and partnerships around the Baltic Sea Region and throughout Europe.

Baltic Rim Economies The Pan-European Institute publishes a bimonthly discussion forum, Baltic Rim Economies (BRE), which focuses on the development of the Baltic Sea Region. In BRE, high-level public and corporate decision makers, representatives of Academia and several other experts contribute to the discussion.

Baltic Sea Region Portal is an Internet Portal from the Secretariat of the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS). The aim of the Portal is to be the main site of reference with regard to Baltic Sea regional information on events, news, ongoing activities and background information.

Baltic Sea School Berlin (Ostsee-Kolleg) is affiliated to the Department for Northern European Studies at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. It is the institutional forum for all study and research activities dealing with the politics, culture, history, and economy of the Baltic Sea Region.

Carnegie Moscow Center was established as a subdivision of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (Washington, DC) and started its activities in 1994. Beyond the Moscow Center, the Carnegie Endowment maintains offices in Beijing, Beirut and Brussels, making it the world’s first global research organization.

Center for East European Studies, was established in 1996, affiliated to the Department of International Business and Management in Copenhagen. Research at CEES aims at deepen the understanding of the transition process as a whole as well as specific aspects such as enterprise transformation and foreign direct investment. Education initiatives strives to enhance the knowledge of individuals in East and West about each others business, economic, and social conditions.

Center for European Studies, was established in 2003 as subdivision of the European University at Saint-Petersburg. Accordingly with the main strategy of the Center, which turned to studying of European policy and government, processes of political transformation of political identity in the North-Western Russia, the Center realizes scientific and educational projects in the sphere of European studies.

Center for Security Studies, was founded in 1986. Today, the CSS is a significant Swiss academic center of competence in security policy with an international outreach. The CSS has an extensive international network of partners from academia, politics, diplomacy, public administration, the media, and the private sector.

Centre for Baltic and East European Studies (CBEES) was founded in 2005 to coordinate research and doctoral studies focusing on the Baltic Sea Region and Eastern Europe, at Södertörn University (Södertörns högskola). The aim of CBEES is to extend the Baltic Sea Region and East European profile of Södertörn University at the same time as fostering a multidisciplinary approach. CBEES is home to the Baltic and East European Graduate School (BEEGS), the German Studies Research Unit, as well as several other projects and programmes.

Centre for Baltic Studies, (CBS) is an inter-faculty centre at the University of Tartu, for studying the Baltic Sea Region. Its main activity is to offer both MA Programme and a semester programme on the Baltic Studies in English by welcome international students from all over the world.

Centre for Europan Research (CERGU), was established in 1995. Its main aim is to stimulate multidisciplinary research and studies focusing on European issues. CERGU primarily fills the function as communication resource for researchers within different academic disciplines at University of Gothenburg and as support organization for research networks with universities and institutes in Sweden and abroad.

Centre for Russian and East European Studies (CREES) was established in 1963. CREES is a multi-disciplinary centre focusing politics, international development, sociology and European Studies. CREES is a part of The School of Government and Society at the University of Birmingham.

Centre for Russian, Eurasian and Central European Studies , at the University of Leeds has a long Russian Studies tradition; the Department was founded in 1918. Today the approach is a multi-media, cross-discipline combination of historical, political, social issues and artistic practices.

Council of the Baltic Sea States is an overall political forum for regional inter-governmental cooperation. The Members of the Council are the eleven states of the Baltic Sea Region – Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden as well as the European Commission.

Department of Eurasian Studies, at the University of Uppsala. The Department of Eurasian Studies constitutes Sweden’s leading meeting place for interdisciplinary research and teaching on developments in Eastern Europe and Northeast Asia. The geographical area of interest stretches from the Balkans, via the Former Soviet Union and onwards to China and North Korea in the far east with the limitations to countries that are or have been centrally planned one-party states and are not members of the European Union.

Department of Slavonic and Baltic Languages and Literatures, Helsinki University. The Department of Modern Languages was launched 2010. The former departments comprising the department had a key role in their specific disciplines in Finland. From this foundation, the new department consolidates its position as the leading Finnish educational organization in the field.

Digital Icons: Studies in Russian, Eurasian and Central European New Media (Digital Icons) is an online publication that appears twice per year. The journal is a multi-media platform that explores new media as a variety of information flows, varied communication systems, and networked communities. Contributions to Digital Icons cover a broad range of topics related to the impact of digital and electronic technologies on politics, economics, society, culture, and the arts in Russia, Eurasia, and Central Europe.

Foundation for Baltic and East European Studies was established in 1994 by the Swedish government. The aim of the Foundation is to support research and the training of doctoral students at Södertörns högskola (Södertörn University). A major portion of the funds awarded has been used for varied research projects in the humanities and social sciences. The Foundation has supported the establishment of the Baltic and East European Graduate School (BEEGS) and the Center for Baltic and East European Studies (CBEES).

Fridtjof Nansen Institute (FNI) is an independent foundation engaged in research on international environmental, energy and resource management politics.

Herder-Institut was founded in Marburg, Germany, in 1950, and is one of the central facilities of historical East Central European research in Germany.The Institute focuses on the history and culture of Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the Kaliningrad region. The Institute pays particular attention to the role of information technology in historical studies. It offers an online bibliographic service  and an online portal, currently under construction, on the history of East Central Europe.

ICCEES (International Council for Central and East European Studies) is a global network of research associations, institutes and individual scholars active in the field of Russian, Central and East European studies. ICCEES was founded in 1974, initially as a joint project of American, British and Canadian research associations. Its main activities include publishing twice a year an ICCEES International Newsletter and organising every fifth year a World Congress.

Centre for Russian, Central and East European Studies,  University of Glasgow, Scotland. In 1999 the School of Slavonic, Central and East European Studies was established at the University of Glasgow, comprising the Department of Central and East European Studies (DCEES) and the Slavonic Studies Section of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (SMLC). The School exists to promote and develop teaching at all levels and research in all fields relating to Slavonic, Central and East European Studies, broadly conceived.

International Peace Research Institute (PRIO) has as its mission to conduct high-quality academic research on questions relevant to the promotion of a more peaceful world. It is an independent and international institute placed in Oslo, Norway.

International Relations and Security Network, (ISN) is the world’s leading open access information service for international relations and security professionals. Established in 1994, its task is to promote greater knowledge sharing, learning and collaboration. The ISN is an online project of the Center for Security Studies (CSS), at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich). It is jointly funded by the Swiss Department for Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) and ETH Zurich.

Karelian Institute, is a research unit of the University of Joensuu, carring out basic and applied research of the intellectual and material development of Eastern Finland, Karelia, and Northwestern Russia. The institute also supports post-graduate studies. The research themes are structured around: 1) regional and spatial studies, 2) ethnic and cultural studies, 3) border and Russian studies, and 4) rural and environmental studies.

Magasinet rØST is a Danish online magazine about Eastern and Central Europe with an aim of distributing a more nuanced picture of the region to a Danish audience, than you normally find in Danish mainstream media.

NERU, The network Northern Europe – from Cold War Division to Restructured Europe
is formed by three expert institutes: the Aleksanteri Institute (University of Helsinki, Finland),
the Centre for Baltic and East European Studies, CBEES (Södertörn University College, Sweden),
and the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, NUPI. The network consists of research groups that are based in these institutes. The funding of the network is provided by NordForsk.

New Eastern Europe is a separate English Edition of Nowa Europa Wschodnia. The bi-monthly Nowa Europa Wschodnia is addressed to all of those interested in Central and Eastern Europe as well as Central Asia. The Polish-based journal is a meeting-place and publication of people from various backgrounds and influences in Polish and European policies as they relate to the East. The journal aims to play a useful role in the process of mutual understanding between people.

NordForsk is a Nordic research board with responsibility for cooperation on research and researcher training in the Nordic region. The organization focuses on research areas in which the Nordic countries are international leaders, and promotes research and researcher training. NordForsk has three main functions – coordination, funding and policy advice.

Northern Dimension Partnership in Public Health and Social Well-being (NDPHS) is a forum for concerted action to tackle challenges to health and social well-being in the Northern Dimension area and foremost in North-West Russia. The NDPHS is one of several existing Partnerships established within the Northern Dimension (ND) policy that began in 2000 with the European Council’s adoption of the 1st Northern Dimension Action Plan. NDPHS is a cooperative effort of eleven governments, the European Commission and eight international organizations.

NUPI, the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs carries out research and disseminates findings on global power relations, security policy, development issues, international economics and Norwegian foreign policy.

Osteuropa Institut, Munchen has for over 50 years, through research, policy advice and information sources, contributed to the study of political and economic developments in Eastern Europe and the Central Asian states of the Former Soviet Union. The Institute focuses on the regions’ historical specificities, analysis of social and economic adjustment processes, the early detection of correlated problems, and the development of practical solutions.

Renvall Institute, the Russian and East European Studies program aims to help students gain an understanding of various issues within the area of the former Russian Empire/Soviet Union. The program covers issues of economics, politics, culture and history including transitions towards a market economy and a new political system.

RussiaInfo is an information service covering online resources on Russia. RUSSIAinfo has been designed for a wide circle of users ranging from researchers, administrators, teachers and students to the business sector and the media. The service meets both national and international needs for information on Russia. The service was launched in September 2005 and is maintained by the Aleksanteri Institute of the University of Helsinki.

Russian Academy of Science, Institutes of General History and Russian History, Moscow. The Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) is a civil self-governed non-commercial organization (institution). Principal aim is obtaining further knowledge of the natural, social and human development principles that promote technological, economic, social and cultural development in Russia.

Russian and East European Studies , University of Sussex, England. The regular Russian Studies seminar was transformed on 6 June into a symposium to which all former students (and teachers) of Russian subjects at Sussex were invited, together with the present students.

Russian and East European Studies, Oxford University, England. Russian and East European Studies is part of the School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies. The Program runs two masters courses, research projects, and a number of workshops and conferences each year.

Russian and Eurasian Security Network, (RES) is a global initiative by leading academic institutes, think tanks, NGOs and media organizations. It provides the framework for studies of security-related developments in Russia and the states of the Eurasian region (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Belarus, Ukraine Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan).

St Petersburg European University, (EUSP) was founded in 1994 and is a non-governmental institution for further education for specialists in the social sciences and humanities. EUSP is licensed to conduct post-graduate courses as well as programs for advanced training and professional development in the social sciences and humanities.

Swedish Society for the Study of Russia, Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia is a forum for the exchange of information and ideas, founded in 1997. The society is politically independent. Members come from a number of different fields; political science, sociology, economics, geography, history and philology, but also translators, diplomats, journalists and teachers. The Society arranges amongst other things lectures and conferences. The Swedish Society has contacts with similar organizations in other countries and with ICCEES (International Council for Central and East European Studies).

University of Helsinki, carries out research of an internationally high standard. Research funding, honors and prizes awarded to our researchers are an indication of the wide-spread esteem among the global scientific community. The University of Helsinki has regularly been ranked among Europe’s 10 to 15 best universities on worldwide ranking lists of research universities. Some 470 doctorates are completed annually and nearly 10,000 scientific articles or monographs are published yearly by the university’s researchers.

University of Latvia named was founded 1919, under the name “The Latvia Higher School”, on the basis of the former Riga Polytechnic (founded in 1862). Today University of Latvia integrates diverse fields of research and studies with creative initiative to provide the higher education of European standard, to cultivate the Latvian language and traditions of cultural cooperation.

Uppsala Centre for Russian and Eurasian Studies (UCRS) was inaugurated 2010 as part of the Swedish Government’s strategic initiative in the research field “politically important geographic regions.” Uppsala Centre for Russian and Eurasian Studies is designed to serve not only as a center of scientific excellence but also as national resource center. At UCRS, there is a permanent staff of researchers at the center, but many more is associated with the center for varying periods of time.

Swedish Institute of International Affairs was founded in l938 as a public service institution, politically independent, for information and research about international political issues. The Institute also has an important function as a forum for debate on international issues and as a meeting place for academics and practitioners, journalists and politicians. The Institute publishes a number of periodicals, fact sheets and books in Swedish but also research and conference reports, monographs and a yearbook in English.

Vilnius University since its establishment in the 16th century, Vilnius University, as integral part of European science and culture has embodied the concept of a classical university and the unity of studies and research. Scientific development and the expanding relations with global research centers have contributed to the variety of research and studies at Vilnius University.
